MapInfo Professional Add-on Module: Drive Time


By utilizing road-related data—such as speed limits, road lengths, and traffic directions—from Kangxun Technology’s comprehensive Taiwan-wide road dataset, this module generates the specific database required for the “Drive Time” function. Within the MapInfo Professional system, it enables the calculation of coverage areas based on a fixed driving time or driving distance from a specific central point.

Drive Time offers three basic functions:

  • Isochrones: Calculates the reachable area within a specified travel time.
  • Isodistances: Calculates the reachable area within a specified travel distance.
  • Route Planning: Determines the fastest or shortest route between two or more specified points.

1. Following the database creation workflow, the system reads road data, maps it to the appropriate fields, and generates the road database. Once the database is successfully loaded, Drive Time displays graphical and text toolbars for user operation.

2. Use the isochrone function: enter the time and unit, then click OK. The system will automatically generate isochrone travel zones (e.g., 30-minute and 40-minute ranges), which can be saved as a new polygon layer.

* When overlaid with the street network map, it is evident that the walkable area is based on actual travel distances along roads; overall, this area is slightly smaller than a 2-kilometer radius estimated directly from a central point.

3. Use the buffer/equidistant ring function: enter the specified distance and unit, then click OK. The system will automatically generate a range at that distance (e.g., 2 kilometers), which can be saved as a new polygon layer.

4. Driving-distance zones can be overlaid with various statistical data—such as population, number of households, income and expenditure, and competitor locations—to gain a deeper understanding of market conditions within the area.

5. You can overlay the driving-distance ranges of all store locations to identify potential overlaps in service areas or calculate metrics such as estimated population figures within the overlapping zones.
